'Abdul Hamid Zia Pasha', c1906, (1907). Abdul Hamid Zia Pasha (1825-1881), poet, publicist and secretary in the Imperial Palace in 1855, translating many French and Spanish works into Turkish. A Founder of the Young Turkish Movement, a political reform movement, favouring replacement of the absolute monarchy of the Ottoman Empire with a constitutional monarchy. Charles George Gordon(1833-85), English soldier, 1924. Artist: Unknown

Major-General Charles George Gordon (1833-1885), British army officer and administrator. Also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum. He saw action in the Crimean War as an officer in the British Army. In the early 1860s, Gordon and his men were instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion. He was killed at Khartoum 26 January 1885 when forces of the Mahdi overwhelmed the city. Taken from the 'Leaders of Men' cigarette cards produced by Ogdens 1924.
