The Stonehouse themed pub, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1971. Artist: Michael Walters

The Stonehouse themed pub, Sheffield, 1971. Popular with both students from the local university and drinkers taking advantage of the busy night life Sheffield had to offer, the Stonehouse was always popular, with its street theme and cobbled flooring. Taken in 1971 for Tetleys, this was probably one of the first of the UK's themed pubs. The pub has since been closed down and the land used for redevelopment.

Artist's concept of Command Module re-entry in 5000° heat. The Apollo Command/Service Module was used for the Apollo program which landed astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. An ablative heat shield on the outside of the CM protected the capsule from the heat of re-entry (from space into Earth's atmosphere), which is sufficient to melt most metals. During re-entry, the heat shield charred and melted away, absorbing and carrying away the intense heat in the process.

Full view of Io, one of the moons of Jupiter, 1979. Taken from the Voyager 1, this moon was named the pizza moon because of its mottled appearance. Io is highly volcanic and this picture was taken from a distance of 862, 000 kilometres. Two Voyager spacecraft were launched in 1977 to explore the planets in the outer solar system. Both flew past Jupiter in 1979 before flying on to Saturn.
