Apollo 13 Astronauts Practice Moonwalk at KSC, Florida, USA, 1970. Apollo 13 astronauts James A. Lovell and Fred W. Haise, Jr., during practice moonwalk at Kennedy Space Center. Lovell (right) operates Lunar Equipment conveyor, a pulley arrangement to load and unload equipment from the cabin section of Lunar Module. Apollo 13's original target on the Moon was the Fra Mauro region, southeast of the Ocean of Storms, to perform an inspection, survey, and sampling of the lunar surface, as well as to deploy and activate the ALSEP package, obtain photographs of candidate exploration sites and to develop human capability to work in the lunar environment. This mission drastically changed after an explosion of one of the oxygen tanks in the Service Module forced the Apollo 13 crew to abort the lunar landing mission and return to Earth

The lesson of SS Titanic: Lifeboat drill on a passenger liner, 1912

The lesson of SS Titanic: Lifeboat drill on a passenger liner, 1912. Operated by the White Star Line, on 14 April 1912 SS Titanic struck an iceberg in thick fog off Newfoundland. She was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of her time, and thought to be unsinkable. In the collision five of her watertight compartments were compromised and she sank. Out of the 2228 people on board, only 705 survived. A major cause of the loss of life was the insufficient number of lifeboats she carried. Better provision of lifejackets and lifeboats began immediately after the disaster. From Le Petit Journal. (Paris, 2 June 1912)
