Peruvian drinking cup, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Peruvian drinking cup, 1845. Item from the collection of British critic, travel writer and slaveowner William Beckford, who was also an art collector and patron of works of decorative art. After he died, the collection at his home Lansdown Tower just outside Bath was put up for sale. The catalogue numbers some 650 lots, including gorgeous furniture, cabinets, paintings, antique gems, coins, agates, mosaic tables, sculpture, Etruscan vases, rare gold Japan, and what is described as "matchless china"...an ancient Peruvian Drinking Cup [Moche portrait vessel], of red clay, formerly sacred to the Incas, and extremely rare. Mr. Beckford was in the habit of remarking upon this Cup, on account of its similarity to the Etruscan ware, that it appeared as evidence of the supposed Eastern origin of the Peruvians; a notion he was fond of maintaining'. From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

Mantle, c. 300 BC-AD 200. Creator: Unknown

Mantle, c. 300 BC-AD 200. Buried in shaft-tombs or rectangular sunken chambers, the Paracas dead were wrapped in layers of cloth and were accompanied by pottery, food, and other offerings. The dry environment of the Paracas Peninsula has preserved many of these goods, including the richly ornamented garments buried with important individuals. This mantle, probably worn like a cloak, was part of a set of matching garments that also includes a shirt and a long headband. To create this garment, three strips of blue cloth were stitched together side by side. The double-bird motifs of both the field and the borders were embroidered in vivid red, blue, yellow and green yarns. The linear form of the embroidery and the nesting of the motifs are typical of what is called the Paracas Cavernas Style. The double-bird motifs probably had symbolic importance, perhaps signifying the owner's clan

Feathered Panel, 600-900. Creator: Unknown

Feathered Panel, 600-900. Of all the luxury textile types made in the ancient Andes, feathered cloth was one of the most esteemed. This large panel, covered with plumes of the blue-and-yellow macaw, was found with ninety-five others identical to it in an offering buried on Peru's southern desert coast. The panels original function is mysterious. Many have ties that dangle from each upper corner, giving rise to speculation that the panels served as hangings. Together they would have covered a 2,000-square-foot area, transforming it into a ceremonial space of breathtaking brilliance and spectacle. But the panels may also have been made solely as an offering, a lavish sacrifice of precious materials, time, and labor to supernatural forces
