M. Park, (1771-1806), 1830. Mungo Park (1771-1806) Scottish explorer of West Africa, noted for exploration of the upper Niger River c1796, his book Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa, theorised the Niger and Congo merged to become the same river. A terracotta figure of a man excavated in the Djenne/Mopti area. Most of these figures are found in wall cavities in the ruins of mud-brick houses. It is thought that they either represent devotees in household ancestral shrines or were intended to protect the house from flooding by the Niger. Country of Origin: Mali. Culture: Djenne/Mopti.
