Italian Renaissance ceiling and wall painting, (1898). Creator: Unknown

Italian Renaissance ceiling and wall painting, (1898). 'Fig 1: Ceiling-painting in the Palazzo Doria at Genoa. Fig 2: Pilaster-decoration from the Loggie of the Vatican at Rome. Figs 3 and 4: Panels in a window-niche in the Vatican Museum, ibid...Ornamental wall-and ceiling painting of High-Renaissance is represented in its highest beauty and dignity by the works of Raffaelle and his school, especially in the Loggie of the Vatican. Although a great part of those paintings are not from his own hand, yet they were carried out by his pupils after the master's designs, and in his spirit...To a pupil of Raffaelle also, the paintings in the Palazzo Doria at Genoa are to be ascribed'. Plate 53 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

Design for mural decoration, Italy, (1928). Creator: Unknown

Design for mural decoration, Italy, (1928). '2nd Quarter of 18th Century... Probably by a member of the family of stucco workers Bossi which was also considerably employed in Germany. The water-colour bears the inscription "Bossi inve : et deli." It is not clear whether this is an artist's signature or a
note ascribing the picture to Bossi. As there is, however no doubt that the inscription was written in the 18th century it may be regarded as more or less trustworthy'. After a water-colour. Plate CI, fig 195, from "An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the XIXth Century" with explanatory text by Helmuth Bossert. [Ernst Wasmuth Ltd., Berlin, 1928]

Painted decoration in the Stasovsky Crypt, Cimmerian Bosporus, Kerch, (1928). '1st half of 2nd Century. A.D...Kertsch, South Russia'. The crypts on the northern slope of Mt Mithridates in Kerch, Crimea, were discovered in 1872 by the Russian art critic and scholar V. V. Stasov. The Cimmerian Bosporus (the ancient name for the Strait of Kerch) is one of the most important centres of Greek colonisation on the Northern coast of the Black Sea. The paintings in the Stasovsky Crypt, which dates from the early 2nd century AD, are a combination of two styles: inlay (the earlier one) and floral, (the later one).
