City Justice, 1880. Alderman Sir Robert Walter Carden, British banker, politician and magistrate. Carden (1801-1888) served as Lord Mayor of London from 1857-1858. A Conservative, he was MP for Gloucester from 1857-1859 and for Barnstaple from 1880-1885. In 1887 he was made a baronet. Cartoon from Vanity Fair, 11th December 1880

Portrait after Samuel Lane of Anthony Brown, Chamberlain of the City of London:for upwards of 40 years has been a member of the Corporation, 23 years a magistrate, and served the office of Sheriff in 1825, and Lord Mayor in 1827. The worthy Alderman is a fluent and well-informed speaker, and has lately distinguished himself in the Court of Common Council by his vindication of the rights of the Livery.
