Ichaboe - mode of shipping the guano, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Ichaboe - mode of shipping the guano, 1844. Loading bird manure off the coast of south-west Africa. Account of Lieutenant Petrie: Up to the 24th of May, in this year alone, twelve ships have already arrived in Liverpool, whose united cargoes amount to 6670 tons. A large number of ships are now loading, by last accounts, at Ichaboe, and many more are on their way with cargoes from that place, so that the market will, no doubt, be immediately supplied with abundance, at very moderate prices'. This was the guano equivalent of the American gold rush. From "Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

Philadephia, from Below the New South-Street-Bridge, 1874. Creator: Alfred Harral

Philadephia, from Below the New South-Street-Bridge, 1874. Cargo boats on the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. the largest vessels..., their tapering masts and graceful yards presenting a picture which, in a bright, sunny day, might have won the admiration and employed the pencil of Turner. The scene at this point is usually a busy one. Noisy steam-tugs, light sail-boats, scows, canal-boats, and other kinds of craft, crowd the stream, and impart that life and vivacity peculiar to the water-front of a flourishing commercial city'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant.
