Hannah Snell, British soldier, 18th century (1904). Hannah Snell (1723-1792) disguised herself as a man and became a soldier after her husband deserted her. She served in India, fighting against the French, and was wounded on several occasions. After returning to England she sold her story, which was published under the title The Female Soldier and appeared on stage in her uniform, performing military drills and singing songs. She was honourably disharged from the army and granted a pension by the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. A print from The Girl's Own Annual, 1st October 1904
