Gulliver at the royal palace of the Lilliputians, lantern slide, late 19th century

Gulliver at the royal palace of the Lilliputians, lantern slide, late 19th century. ...I got into the inmost court; and, lying down upon my side, I applied my face to the windows of the middle stories, which were left open on purpose, and discovered the most splendid apartments that can be imagined. There I saw the empress and the young princes, in their several lodgings, with their chief attendants about them. Her imperial majesty was pleased to smile very graciously upon me, and gave me out of the window her hand to kiss'. A scene from "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift, first published in 1726. One of a series of 12 Superior Lithographic Coloured Lantern Slides...with Lecture complete, made in England c1870-1900

Gulliver captures the Blefuscudians ships, lantern slide, late 19th century. They had seen me cut the cables, and thought my design was only to let the ships run adrift or fall foul on each other: but when they perceived the whole fleet moving in order, and saw me pulling at the end, they set up such a scream of grief and despair as it is almost impossible to describe or conceive'. Dante and Virgil with giant, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham Featured Print

Dante and Virgil with giant, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham

Dante and Virgil with giant, 1951. Design for illustration to Dante's "Divine Comedy". Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time
