Richard Wellesley, Marquis Wellesley, British politician and colonial administrator, 1813 (c1857). The elder brother of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, Richard Colley Wellesley (1760-1842) served as Governor-General of India from 1797 until 1805. He oversaw the defeat of Tippoo Sultan and the ending of French influence in India. He served as Foreign Secretary from 1809-1812 and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1821-1828 and 1833-1834. Earl Granville, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1882. Granville George Leveson-Gower (1815-1891), 2nd Earl Granville held various ministerial posts in Liberal governments of the mid to late 19th century. In 1848 as vice-president of the Board of Trade he was prominent in promoting the Great Exhibition of 1851. He is best remembered for his two spells as Foreign Secretary in Gladstone's administrations, holding the post in 1870-1874 and 1880-1885.
