Royal Academy - Prize Sculpture, 1844. After The Battle of the Centaurs and Lapithae, a sculpture by Edward Bowring Stephens. For this beautiful bas-relief, 7 feet by 4 feet 6 inches, Mr. Edward B. Stephens received the gold medal at the last distribution of prizes at the Royal Academy [in London]. Centaur and Lapith (south metope XXXI) from the Parthenon, Greek, c438-432 BC. Designed by Phidias, the Parthenon frieze adorned the the temple of Athena on the Acropolis in Athens and represents a procession in honour of the Olympian gods.
