King Ludwig II of Bavaria, 1867. Ludwig II (1845-1886) ruled Bavaria from 1864 until 1886. He built the castle of Neuschwanstein in Bavaria and was a patron and devotee of composer Richard Wagner. Known as Mad King Ludwig, he was officially declared insane by the government and deposed. He died in mysterious circumstances shortly afterwards. From a private collection

The Military Order of Max Joseph, c19th century
The Military Order of Max Joseph'. The Military Order of Max Joseph was founded in 1806 by Maximilian I Joseph (1756-1825), the first king of Bavaria. The badge of the order is a white-enameled gold Maltese cross. On the centre of its blue and gold medallion it features the monogram of Max Joseph (MJK) and on the reverse the Latin motto of the order, Virtuti pro patria. Above the cross is a gold crown
