A Rakes Progress - 8: The Mad House, 1733. Artist: William Hogarth

A Rake's Progress - 8: The Mad House, 1733. True to his nature Tom Rakewell has run through a vast fortune through indulgence in all the luxuries of modern living. He has lived riotously, both gambling and whoring. He has married a rich old widow and been ruined a second time. Now the rake is raving mad and shackled for his own safety in Bedlam, the London lunatic asylum. He is comforted by Sarah Young, the poor girl that he had seduced with a false promise of marriage while he was a student at Oxford. Behind, two fashionable women have come to view the hospital's inmates. From William Hogarth, by Austin Dobson. [Hachette Et Cie, Paris, 1904]

Capitain Thomas Coram, 1740. Artist: William Hogarth

Capitain Thomas Coram, 1740. The philanthropist Thomas Coram (1668-1751) founded the Foundling Hospital after seeing the plight of children left abandoned in the streets, many of whom were young babies close to death. Poverty-stricken mothers would bring their children to the gate, and competition for places was fierce. Handel and Hogarth were among the eminent people who took an active interest in the activities of the hospital. From William Hogarth, by Austin Dobson. [Hachette Et Cie, Paris, 1904]

Burlesque on Kents Altarpiece at St Clement Danes, c1725. Artist: William Hogarth

Burlesque on Kent's Altarpiece at St Clement Danes, c1725. William Kent painted an altarpiece for St Clement Danes Church, London, commissioned by the parishioners. However, they were disappointed when the painting was unveiled and petitioned the Bishop of London, Edmund Gibson, to remove it. It was removed to the vestry during September 1725, although it was borrowed from time to time by the Crown and Anchor Tavern for its music room. The painting was destroyed in an air raid in 1940. From William Hogarth, by Austin Dobson. [Hachette Et Cie, Paris, 1904]
