Yoshiyuki Tsuruta and Erich Rademacher, 1928. Japanese swimmer Yoshiyuki Tsuruta (1903-1986) shakes hands with his German rival Erich Rademacher (1901-1979). Tsuruta won gold medal in the men's 200m breaststroke, and Rademacher won silver in the same event at the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam. Ethel Catherwood of Canada, world champion high jumper, 1928. Ethel Catherwood (1908-1987) won a gold medal in the women's High Jump at the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam, the world's first ever gold medal awarded to a female high jumper. She still holds the title as the only Canadian female athlete to have won an individual gold medal in an Olympic track and field event.
