'Madonna and Child' ('Madonna of the Book'), 1483. The Child is seated on the Virgin's lap, looking questioningly into his mother's face. Round his wrist is a crown of thorns. Before them is an open book and by the Child's shoulder a bowl of fruit containing cherries, the fruit of Paradise, and peaches with leaves, a symbol of truth.
