Ripley, The Anchor Inn, 1911, (1914). Artist: Jamess Ogilvy

Ripley, The Anchor Inn, 1911, (1914). The Anchor Inn, Ripley, Surrey, dates to the early 16th century in its original function as an almshouse. By 1870, cycling became a popular activity in the South of England and Ripley was a convenient distance from London, many cyclists would stop for a break at the Anchor Inn. On Whit Sunday 1894 the Police estimated that 20, 000 cyclists passed through Kingston on their way to Ripley. From A Pilgrimage In Surrey, Vol. 1, by James S. Ogilvy.
