Fort at Tamatave, Madagascar, the scene of the late affray, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Fort at Tamatave, Madagascar, the scene of the late affray, 1845....a combined attack was made upon Tamatave, a port of Madagascar, by one English and two French vessels...The Queen of the island, Ranavaka Maujaka..had been for some time previous pursuing a most reckless course towards the missionaries; and, in the words of a Correspondent of the Times...had been " amusing herself by burning or cutting off the heads of all the native Christians she had been able to lay hands on - many thousands." Here we see the fort, ...from a sketch taken from the mast-head of the Conway: a, the road taken by the men on landing; b, the spot where they formed on the beach; c, boats landing; d, the spot where the Ovahs set up the heads of the enemy on pikes. The precise form and construction of the outworks and the stone fort are likewise shown.... From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII
