After the front on the Styr River in the area of Wolczeck stabilized, in the late autumn of 1915, the 4th Infantry Regiment took up positions near the village of Optowa, and took care of preparing quarters for soldiers, and then tactical fortifications. dugouts were built connected to the trenches by run-up ditches, and for the charges a settlement of dugouts and barracks, which were named Swarm Estate after the name of the regiment commander. The estate was entirely designed by Major Andrzej Galica, an officer of the 4th Infantry Regiment, before the war a lecturer at the State Industrial School in Krakow.
Trenches and shallower run-off ditches were reinforced with logs made of felled trees. Many birches grew in the vicinity of Optowa, hence this tree species dominates in the root architecture'. The soldiers tried to arrange themselves relatively comfortably for the long winter and spring months, so the dugouts had windows and equipment, either made by their own money or taken from the depopulated villages located in the foreground, which were razed to the ground by artillery fire during the operations. Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
