Cornhill in 1630, (c1872). Cornhill, a street in the City of London, is the area where Londons financial importance as a financial centre originated. Between 80 and 100 homes were destroyed by a fire in 1748, and a series of building acts were later passed to make buildings less susceptible to fire. From Old and New London, Vol. II: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. London, Paris & New York]
