Commander Evans observing an Occulation of Jupiter, Antarctica, 1910-1912. Edward Evans (1881-1957) was second in command of Captain Scotts Antarctic expedition of 1910-1913. He led the last supporting party to accompany Scotts polar team, but was taken seriously ill with scurvy on the return to the expeditions base. As a result he was sent home aboard the Terra Nova in March 1912, but returned the following year to pick up the surviving members of the ill-fated expedition.
