The Clumsy Groom, 1859

The Clumsy Groom, 1859. The Government of the Conservative Lord Derby is brought to its knees as it tries to clear the fence of the Reform Bill. In this cartoon, Lord Derby is just about to come off his mount. Lord Palmerston (with the straw in his mouth) and the diminutive Lord Russell, who is dressed as a jockey, watch and wait on the side. Palmerston, ( Pam ), comments that Derby is incapable of managing the horse of government. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 2, 1859
