Framed Print of The Chitral Expedition: Sher Afzul Khan and Prisoners taken by the Khan of Dir... 1895. Creator: P Naumann
The Chitral Expedition: Sher Afzul Khan and Prisoners taken by the Khan of Dir, and brought to India by Captain Younghusband, 1895. The British Army in India. Sketch by Lieutenant C. H. Elger. Sketched from life while resting at Khar, on their way to Pindi. The small boy in the picture is Sher Afzul's son. He is shown thumping his father's back (which he kept on doing for an hour or so), a well-known Afghan remedy for taking away fatigue or pains in the back after a long ride. The men round Sher Afzul are his chief brigadiers and counsellors'. Sher Afzal (1841-1923) was a son of Mehtar Shah Muhammad Afzal II of Chitral and a brother of Mehtar Aman ul-Mulk, who lived most of his life in exile in Afghanistan and Badakhshan. He managed to place himself on the Mehtar's seat for a few weeks in the period leading up to the Chitral Expedition. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
