The Castel Nuovo, at Naples, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The Castel Nuovo, at Naples, 1857....one of the most interesting relics of mediaeval architecture in Naples. It was built, or begun, in the thirteenth century, by Charles I. who was tired of his residence in the Castel Capuano, now the prisons of the Vicaria. A convent of Franciscan friars once stood on the site of the castle; but the walls of the monastery were dismantled in 1284, and replaced by the more warlike walls of the castle. From that time it has borne the name of the Castel Nuovo. It has five principal towers, which are now inclosed within the castle. The strong outer works were built under Alphonso II. about the middle of the fifteenth century...within or about its precincts are included the Military Armoury, the Arsenal for Artillery, the Royal Foundry, and the Marine Arsenal'.
