Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, 1894. Creator: Unknown
Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, 1894. Dating from 1093, the castle was built to keep the northern border of England secured against the threat of invasion from Scotland. Henry VIII converted the castle for artillery, employing the engineer Stefan von Haschenperg. It was besieged by the Parliamentary forces for eight months in 1644, during the English Civil War, served as the prison of Mary Queen of Scots, and played a part in the Jacobite uprising against King George II in 1745.
