The career of Sir Moses Montefiore, 1883. 1. Captain of Surrey Militia, 1805. 2. Carrying despatches of the Battle of Navarino. 3. First Visit to the East, 1827. 4. Presented to Mahomet Ali in Egypt. 5. Interview with the Emperor Nicholas of Russia. 6. Travelling in the Desert...At the time of the French invasion panic, he enrolled himself as a Volunteer in the Surrey Militia, and attained the rank of Captain...In 1827 Mr. and Mrs. Montefiore went their first journey to the East, of which that lady wrote an interesting account...[They] paid a second visit to Palestine, and obtained from Mahomet Ali, then ruler of Syria as well as of Egypt, valuable concessions in favour of the Jews...In 1846, he visited Russia...and had an interview with the Emperor Nicholas, to intercede on behalf of the Jews in Poland and Lithuania. Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore...dispensed large sums for the relief of the distressed Jews [in Palestine], and established hospitals, schools, and agricultural colonies...In 1863, ...Sir Moses Montefiore performed a fatiguing journey to Morocco, travelling in a litter eight days across the African desert. His object was to obtain from the Sultan of Morocco protection for the Jews in that Mussulman State'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
