Framed Print of Captain Oates (1880-1912), English Antarctic explorer, 1916
Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Titus Oates (1880-1912), English cavalry officer with the 6th (Inniskilling). Dragoons, and later an Antarctic explorer. Captain Oates (1880-1912) looked after the ponies that were used for sledge hauling during Scotts final expedition, which left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. They reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, famously walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice, not wanting his ill health to compromise his three companions chances of survival. John Player and Sons cigarette card series Polar Exploration, 1916. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
