The British Troops on the Gallipoli Peninsula, (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: The evacuation of the peninsula was one of the greatest feats of arms in the annals of the British Army. The withdrawal of such a force of men, arms and material, in full view of the enemy only a few hundred yards distant and its embarkation on open beaches within the range of the Turkish batteries was accomplished without the loss of a single man, and a quite negligible loss of war material. The Gallipoli peninsula in western Turkey saw heavy fighting, with many casualties on both sides. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. V, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]
