Belgrade, (1919). In Servian, the name signifies " White Town". The capital of Servia [Serbia] has undergone many vicissitudes of war and had been held variously by the Greeks, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Bosnians, and Servians, who sold it in 1426 to the Emperor Sigismund. It was stormed and retaken from the Turk in 1456 and suffered seven more sieges between 1522 and 1789. In 1862, after a wanton bombardment from the citadal, it was made the capital of Servia. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. I, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]
