The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - a portrait, by Mabuse, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - a portrait, by Mabuse, 1860. Engraving of a painting. The most recent accession to our National Gallery, at least of those which have been exposed to public scrutiny, is the collection of thirty-one pictures purchased last year from M. Edmond Beaucousin, at Paris, for some £5000 or £6000, we do not recollect the exact amount. John Mabuse was an important master of the Flemish school...His scriptural and historical works are of the highest class, but they are but little known in this country...He visited England in the reign of Henry VII. whose portrait he painted...The portrait before us is a fair average specimen of his works in this line. It represents a man dressed in black with fur over his shoulders, and a rosary in his hand - supposed judging from the architectural background, to be standing in a church'.
