Alfred Elmore, artist and Royal Academician, 1881. Elmore (1815-1881), first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1834, when aged only 19. He became an associate of the Academy in 1845 and a full member in 1856. Born in Ireland, Elmore was primarily a painter of historical subjects, his best known work being Two Gentlemen of Verona (1857), depicting a scene from the Shakespeare play of the same name. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
