Alexander H Stephens, American politician, and a servant, c1870s (1955). Stephens (1812-1883) served as Vice-president of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. He was a US congressman for Georgia before and after the war and was Governor of Georgia from 1882 until his death. Made invalid from a fall, Stephens was a neighbour of Matthew Bradys at the National Hotel in Washington.
