Wolseys West Facade of Hampton Court Palace and the Disinterred Bridge, c1935

Wolseys West Facade of Hampton Court Palace and the Disinterred Bridge, c1935. Hampton Court, former royal palace in Richmond upon Thames, London. Started by Cardinal Wolsey in 1514, the Palace passed to King Henry VIII in 1529 when Wolsey fell from favour. It was extensively altered by Henry. The last monarch to use the Palace was George II. The bridge was supposedly rediscovered in the late 19th century after the moat had been filled in, and was later excavated, with the statues of heraldic beasts re-instated. From " Wonderful London, Volume 2", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. [The Fleetway House, London, c1935]
