William Thomas Stead, English author and journalist, c1890. Stead (1849-1912) was editor of the Northern Echo (1871-1880) and the Pall Mall Gazette (1883-1890). He exposed the scandal of child prostitution in London. Stead was drowned in the sinking of the SS Titanic on 14 April 1912, aparently sitting quietly reading a book in the First Class smoking room as the ship went down. From The Cabinet Portrait Gallery.
