William Harrison Ainsworth, author, 1881. Ainsworth (1805-1882) was a prolific writer of historical romantic fiction. His best-known works were Rookwood (1834), which popularised the story of the highwayman Dick Turpin, and Windsor Castle (1843), which concerns the legend of Herne the Hunter.
