Last Time the Caprons, Father and Son, Met, Spanish-American War, June 1898, (1899). Ships in the harbour at Port Tampa, Florida, USA. The Comal ( number 7 ), was commanded by Captain Allyn Capron Senior, His son, Captain Allyn Capron Junior, was on board the Yucatan ( number 8 ). Both ships were taking troops to Cuba where, only days later, Capron Junior became the first United States Army officer to die in the Spanish-American War. He was awarded a posthumous Silver Star. Capron Senior contracted typhoid fever during the campaign and died weeks after his son, in September 1898. From " The Little I saw of Cuba" by Burr McIntosh, with photographs by the author.
