The Battle of the Rubric, 1866. Artist: John Tenniel

The Battle of the Rubric, 1866. The Archbishop of Canterbury says My Friends! My Friends! You ll Destroy that good old Book of Prayer between You. The Archbishop of Canterbury fears the Book of Common Prayer might be destroyed. Ritualism, the return of the Church of England to medieval tradition, became increasingly prevalent during the 1850s and 1860s. This battle of the use of the liturgy caused a split between the high and low clergy of the Church of England. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 24, 1866.The Archbishop of Canterbury remonstrates with opposing members of the Church. The one on the left represents the High Church, and the one on the right represents the Low Church
