Scene from "Harlequin and Johnnys Ride", at Astley s, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Scene from " Harlequin and Johnnys Ride", at Astley s, 1844. London stage production at Astleys Royal Amphitheatre. The harlequinade here consisted of a version of " Johnny Gilpins Ride; or, the Black Witch of Edmonton, " with a sort of necromantic opening, followed by some comic scenes of average merit; the main incident being the celebrated Citizens ride, the role filled by " the popular equestrian, Mr. Wells"...The effect of the pantomime was, probably, somewhat anticipated by the first piece of the evening - " The Royal Fox- Hunt, " which is a veritable treat, and a cleverly managed spectacle throughout.
