In the background his brother-in-law Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, the hero of the novel, works the bellows that create the draught to keep the forge fire burning. Both men are wearing heavy protective leather aprons. Around them are the tools and paraphenalia expected in a blacksmiths workship, including an anvil, a vice, horsehoes, files and iron bars.
