Scene from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, (London c1870). Artist: Charles Green

Scene from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, (London c1870). Joe Gargery, the gentle giant, is provoked into violence in his smithy. In the background his brother-in-law Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, the hero of the novel, works the bellows that create the draught to keep the forge fire burning. Both men are wearing heavy protective leather aprons. Around them are the tools and paraphenalia expected in a blacksmiths workship, including an anvil, a vice, horsehoes, files and iron bars. From Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. (London, c1870). First edition London, 1860-1861
