Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, English soldier, 1815. One of Wellingtons most trusted lieutenants during the Peninsular War (1809-1814), Hill (1772-1842) was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1812 and General in 1825. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the army in England in 1825 when Wellington became Prime Minister, holding the post until 1839. He was made a Viscount in 1842
