The Rev. John Russell, 1879. John ( Jack ) Russell (1795-1883) was the vicar of Swimbridge and rector of Black Torrington in North Devon. Known as The Sporting Parson, Russell was a fox-hunter and dog breeder who developed the Jack Russell Terrier, a variety of the Fox Terrier breed.
