Reception of James II in Dublin, 1689
Reception of James II in Dublin, 1689. After the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the parliaments of England and Scotland recognised William III and Mary as King and Queen. The deposed James II remained popular in Ireland however, with the Irish parliament continuing to recognise him as sovereign. James travelled from exile in France to Ireland in 1689, with 6000 French soldiers. War ensued between James and Williams supporters, ending with James decisive defeat by William at the Battle of the Boyne the following year. A print from Cassells Illustrated History of England
