Rear-Admiral Alfred Taylor Dale, Commander in Chief of the Flying Squadron, 1896. In 1896 Dale (1840-1925) commanded the Particular Service Squadron, a squadron of six ships mobilised after Kaiser Wilhelm II sent a congratulatory telegram to President Paul Kruger of the South African Republic after his repulsing of the Jameson Raid. Known as the Flying Squadron, it was held in readiness for 10 months before being disbanded in November 1896. A print from The Navy and Army Illustrated, 6th March 1896
