Poplar Almshouses Founded In The Seventeenth Century, 1926, (c1935). Woman standing outside Hester Hawes almshouses at Bow Lane in the East End of London. In 1696, Hester or Esther Hawes left money in her will for charitable housing for six poor widows. The buildings were demolished in 1953.
