Ethel Catherwood of Canada, world champion high jumper, 1928. Ethel Catherwood (1908-1987) won a gold medal in the womens High Jump at the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam, the worlds first ever gold medal awarded to a female high jumper. She still holds the title as the only Canadian female athlete to have won an individual gold medal in an Olympic track and field event.
