Old Temple Bar and the Devil Tavern, (1897). Creator: Unknown
Old Temple Bar and the Devil Tavern, (1897). Temple Bar in Fleet Street, shown here as it might have looked in the 18th century, was the principal ceremonial entrance to the City of London from the City of Westminster. The arch, made of Portland stone, was designed by Christopher Wren. (In the 19th century it became a bottleneck for traffic, and was dismantled. It was later re-erected near St Pauls Cathedral). From Old and New London, Volume I, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris & Melbourne, 1897]
