Old Bethlehem Hospital, Moorfields about 1750, (c1872). View of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in London dating back to the 13th century. The building at Moorfields (seen here), was designed by natural philosopher and City Surveyor Robert Hooke, and constructed between 1675 and 1676. The term bedlam is derived from the hospitals prior nickname, (a corruption of Bethlehem).
