The last moments of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, 1583 (c1880). Gilbert (1539-1583) was an English soldier and navigator who was one of the pioneers of the English colonisation of North America. He died on the return journey from Newfoundland on 9th September 1583 when his ship, the Squirrel sank in bad weather.
