Loss and Gain, 1875. Artist: Joseph Swain
Loss and Gain, 1875. John Bull, the representative of the British people, stands with Mr Punch on the coast of Ireland and looks into the gloom. This relates to an incident that took place off the coast of Wicklow in September 1875. Two of the nations prized Channel Fleet came into collision. Both of the ships involved were of the new iron-clad models. The Vanguard was sunk, but there was no loss of life. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 18, 1875
